"Large county + academic hospital/program. Mentorship from some of the biggest leaders in EM. Teaching rounds at beginning and end of each EM shift, large emphasis on teaching which residents endorsed. Underserved population with 55% latin population and large spanish speaking population. Weel resourced for a county program, with no equipment shortage and good SW / interpreter services. Newer ED looks nice (the larger hospital is not as new/nice). Residents can jobs wherever afterwards, justify 4th year. Access to lots of events, dining, outdoor activities, beaches within 15 minutes or sometimes within walking distance for residents. 8-10 hour shifts, no 12 hour shifts, adjusted for circadian rhythm. Attendings seem happy, friendly, engaged, teach on shift. EM runs traumas, all airways and procedures with surgery supervision. Split floor and ICU intubations with anesthesia. Only procedure competition is with ortho but can still do procedures with them / sedation, and otherwise less consultation unless EM needs them. No turf battle as EM has admitting priveledges. Large amount of selectives, described as a "mini fellowship," which allows to explore interests - sports/ event med. Mentorship and "families" with residnets/attendings of similar interest. Doc box looks chill, attendings and pharmacy with enough computers. LEadership emphasized wellness, diversity and social EM. Several benefits and $ reimmbursement for housing (4K currently, rising to 6K and possibly higher in future) or education (1K) to offset cost of living. Medical spanish opportunities. Academic focus for a county program with in house IRB, large grant money. Large alumni network with big time connections, many current faculty are leaders of SAEM and other main EM organizations. Little staff turnover. Receptive to resident feedback. Would graduate with plenty of opportunities and confidence to handle anythin. RESIDENT Q&A - residents seemed happy, social, really seemed to do things outside of the ED together. Enjoyed outdoor activities, drinking, support system is strong reportedly. Said off servicr rotations intern year are hard but you learn a lot, EM rotations are fantastic to them. Lots of event opportunities (raves, sports, etc). "
