Over the last twenty years, training family medicine residents in East Hawaii has evolved from a dream to reality. With the support of countless community members, political officials, and local groups/leaders, the program launched in 2014 with its inaugural class of PGY1s. This program is a fully ACGME-accredited, community-based family medicine residency training program sponsored by Hilo Medical Center.

"The longest interview I've gone to so far. Total of 5 hours. 6 mini interviews followed by a clinical case discussion pf 45 minutes with an attending and all the applicants of the day. It was exhausting. They really want people to stay there after residency, so seems like most of their residents are from there. I don't blame them though. The area is really in need of more physicians. Just feel kinda bumped that they might not rank me well due to no personal connections with the island. "

The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
