Interview Experience

"Interview day was from 7:40AM-12:30PM over Zoom - a long morning. It started with an overview and introduction that lasted quite a while, introductions included each person in the meeting (applicants, residents, faculty) giving a brief background and story of an adventure they've had. Intros took quite a while - obviously it was to provide opportunities to show they want to get to know us and connect to us applicants. (just a little long haha) We were then split into two Zoom meetings, one for one-on-one interviews with the PD, head of BH, one faculty member, and a PGY-2, with short 2-5 minute presentations expanding on areas of the curriculum between each one. The other meeting was for a virtual tour and Q&A with an intern. A lot of information along with the interviews. The PD loves working with residents and loves rural medicine, resident education, and fostering a family-friendly environment. I was asked questions like -"What do you envision your practice looking like in 5-10 years?" - "Tell me about a time you received unexpected or surprising feedback - how did you react in the moment, and what did you do about it?" - "How would you go about partnering with a community organization (in regards to the community outreach projects of residents)?" - "What part or experience in medical school was most fulfilling for you? How do you envision that changing/looking differently in residency?" - "Tell me about a time you had to sacrifice your needs for someone else?" - "Why our program, aside from geography?" - "What do you anticipate will be the hardest part for you as you enter residency?" - "What sort of things do you want in your toolbox that will be must-haves as you look at residency programs? What sort of things do you think you won't need or necessarily want?" - "Tell me about a time there was bias shown toward you or your own bias came up in an interaction and how that affected or changed the interaction with the other person or people involved." There were several dates provided for socials with only residents via Zoom to give applicants a chance for more candid Q&A opportunities. A post-interview survey was sent right away, and we were told we would receive a post-match survey as well."

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
