Program Info
The Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency is devoted to providing an excellent education that prepares physicians for practice in South Dakota and other areas of the mostly rural upper Midwest. Practice in a rural community is quite different from suburbia. It requires a broad knowledge base, solid procedural skills, a comfort level with telemedicine, and an ability to improvise. It also requires one to be comfortable caring for friends and neighbors, to participate in the local organizations and activities, and a willingness to assume a leadership role in the community. Rural medicine involves more than merely staffing the local healthcare facilities.

"In-person interview (although a concession must have been made for the other applicant that day, as he was piped in from another state). Program provided a hotel room the night before, and lunch with the residents after the interviews. Toured the clinic and hospital. Interview was structured but comfortable, with plenty of time for questions at the end. This is a fairly new program that is still morphing and improving. If you like hunting and fishing, or being involved in state politics, this is a great location. I have no doubt the training would be great, and there is much autonomy once you move to Pierre. As of my interview date, OBGYN is a weakness in this area, but you will get all of your numbers in your first year while in Sioux Falls."
