Interview Experience

"Advanced, 5 spots per year. Smaller size, seem to have one-on-one, individualized training more than some other programs. Great location - Only 45 mins from dad and mark, beaches, warmer weather. But higher crime rate in Mobile I guess. Low cost of living. Good: Offer meal stipend, moving stipend, good amount of edu resources (ABR fees, AIRP, books, meetings, and review courses), free parking, they’ll match your 403B contributions! o Starbucks on site o Good area, small but nearby a lot of good stuff, warm/south. o Research requirements seem reasonable. o Mini-fellowships available last year (3 blocks in chosen area, requires 1 additional scholarly project and 1 additional QI project). Offered in the 8 subspecialties, plus ER MRI, and Oncologic Imaging. Decent amount of electives. o Formal mentoring program, but they also let it naturally shape as the program progresses. o They do dedicated 1st year lectures to kind of give you the basics. o Currently working on implementing global health opportunities thru RAD-AID. o Residents have means by which to give feedback and the admin is very receptive and willing to work with/fulfill the resident requests. o They do mostly one-on-one readouts and more hand-holding first year and then you gradually become more indep which is nice. o Seem to promote resident wellness and have various benefits that come from that. o Good health insurance per Chief who did the slideshow. Travel reimbursement. o **They pay for review courses and give protected study time for boards** o 5th Friday “Resident Appreciation Days”, they schedule accommodation for personal health appts, free evals and counseling for resident and family EAP. o (+) Moonlighting. ● Bad: PD seems a bit odd and asked some ridiculous Qs in the interview. No rad assistant it seems. o Start call in Oct of 1st year, so kind of early – But there’s an attending on and they graduate you into indep. o High-volume = Can be overwhelming. - The call seems like a bit much, esp first two years, and there are 24-hour calls on Sats. - They do have a lot of exposure - Level I trauma center, Stroke Center, Burn Center, Breast imagining location, CA Center, women and children's hospital, etc. - Low cost of living (Salary isn't great but it evens out). 4 weeks vaca and 12 sick days - Good. Doesn't seem like they provide paid family or maternity leave, only unpaid. - 1 research project and one QI project required throughout residency - not too bad. - Seem genuinely interested in resident wellness and they have numerous benefits assoc with that. "The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
