Interview Experience
NEW

"Overall this seems like a great program with a lot of "pros" and few "cons" - Mainly just the location, unfortunately. - They allow moonlighting, $100/hr for R3 and R4s, may soon allow R2s to participate in the 2nd half of the R2 year. - The program has a good wellness fund for residents and sponsors activities like once a month. The residents seem to get along well and do a lot of fun things together. Seems family friendly. - The residents indicated in multiple instances that the attendings, PD, etc. are very receptive, flexible, and reasonable with requests, feedback, and so forth. - They do "Buddy call" the first couple months, then gradually ease you into it more...Always have an attending on also at first. Night float doesn't start until R2, can be overwhelming at first being the only one physically there, but its good practice and there is always an attending on-call to help if need be and they're usually happy to do so. Call is front-loaded in the R3 year to allow the residents to have a lot of study time for boards. They also transition to half days as boards get close, They pay for and give dedicated, non-vaca time for board reviews (both core and physics). Have in-house physicists who do lectures weekly. Call seems reasonable overall. They also make sure that you're not on call the wknd before or after a vaca week, which is nice. They do take 3 "no-call" requests per month as well. - Residents said there is a decent work-life balance; they all seemed happy and positive about the program. They also noted that a lot of the alumni residents are returning to work there bc they really liked it. - Good cafeteria, Starbucks on site at Morristown, Panera at Overlook, $1300 meal stipend. Free parking. $1000 book stipend that can be rolled over into the next year. AIRP costs covered ($5000). - Offer subsidized nearby housing in 3 locations, which is done by a lottery system. There is free parking on-site at all of them, as well as shared laundry on site. The costs are significantly lower. Residents said it isn't super hard to get if you apply soon after matching. Overall, they said the cost of living and salary are pretty well matched. - Easy access from both Morristown and Summit to NYC. Good access to lot of hiking, cities, airports, trains, beaches, etc. Good location. Both towns have cute and bustling downtowns/main streets with shops and restaurants (Looked very cute in video). Have a six flags in NJ and one of the largest malls in the country. - The didactics seem strong, have a morning and noon one revert day. They also have a half hour of protected personal time every day from 1-1:30. - As a resident you get access to a lot of wellness stuff, plus discounts a lot of places like gyms. - They do have a global health section/opportunities. - 6 months of electives 4th year. 4 wks vaca and 5 personal/sick days. - Good number of sites and exposure...Overlook is a but slower so you can learn more and take your time, Morristown is high volume so you see a lot and get good experience. Sites are all within like 20 mins. - For the first 2 years you essentially do on-on-one readouts with attendings and then gradually get more indep as you want, but can still choose to do more one-on-one style. PRocedures - you can get plenty of hands-on but they don't like force it down your throat. - They have a 24/7 radiology assistant to answer phone calls and triage things, which is super helpful. - IMG friendly, have 3 SGU students right now. - Research requirements: 1 QA project and 2 case reports within the 4 years; must have at least 1 project accepted (not necessarily presented I guess) at an institutional, local, regional, or national conference. They pay for all costs assoc with presenting. - Offer training in starting your own practice. - Highly rated and ranked hospitals. Overlook is great for neuro, Morristown is high-volume and well-respected. They have a Breast Center, CA center, both are Stroke centers, a children's hospital, level I trauma center, outpt clinics, etc. - 1:1 resident-attending ratio, 35+ attendings. Offer 2 ESIR spots per year, and are willing to be flexible if more than 2 people are interested."

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
