Interview Experience

"Overall - Very good vibe and I really liked the people. Only negatives are: Location and high cost of living. Overall ranking: 9.2/10 - Residents were super friendly and seemed genuinely happy and like they really held the program in high regard - Only things they'd change are: higher salary and more people in leadership. - 4 weeks vaca. - No book stipend, but they provide many study resources (and are willing to buy ones they don't have if requested), including paid board review courses. They also provide dedicated board study time - 3 months!! Free meals/meal stipend when on call only. Access to Univ fitness center. (+) free parking. - Didactics seem good. Rotations at NUMC and StonyBrook (for PET, MSK, Cardiac, and peds). Level 1 trauma center, Stroke center, Burn center, etc...Good/broad exposure, plenty of trauma stuff. Stonybrook commute is a bit far though. High volume-ish. - High board passage and fellowship match rates. Many of the attendings are people who did their residency there - This tells me it must be a good program and place to work because people stay/come back. - No overnight or indept call R1 year. More call shifts than some programs because of the smaller size. - Small program size, so high degree of one-on-one training. The program also sounds like it is quite receptive to resident feedback. Open door policy and good resident:attending dynamic. Attendings are approachable. - Residents said that there is a wellness fund for resident activities and they've even given them half days off for these activities. They try to plan them regularly, but it depends on if you have people who will take the initiative to do so. - Food in the cafeteria isn't great according to the resident haha, but there is a Starbucks and some good food options very close by. - The have all residents do a BootCamp intro for reading for 1-hr every day for the first month (or something like this) and then continue on-call training during first year as help to prep you for call. Seems like they try to help ease the transition well. - Area: Long island, so not ideal, but nice balance of country living with hiking and beaches nearby but also easy accessibility to NYC (30-60 mins). Good train system and 2 international airports around 30 mins away. - There is subsidized on-campus housing that is available to apply for - Residents say it isn't crazy competitive and very affordable. If you apply and don't get it, the program will provide you will a housing stipend. If cost is a concern the program is very helpful. - PD and Chair is very interesting in traveling and also shares my love of exhilarating activities and passion for global health - So we had a lot of common interests and plenty to talk about. - The facility didn't look like anything special in the videos, but wasn't like run down or anything. In the video, the residents talked about the great environment and atmosphere with very friendly people and camaraderie. - They provide healthcare for the underserved in their community so you have to be okay with providing care for a lot of very poor, sick people without insurance and such. - Don't offer electives which is interesting and not ideal. - They like their residents to be quite adept in US scanning bc they don't have techs at off hours, so they probably will rank me higher for this reason, lol. - Schedule is 8-4 at NUMC and 8-5 at Stonybrook - Residents say you're out on time 99% of the time. They said that for most residents this program offers a good work-life balance (they're chiefs so it is a bit more demanding for them, but they still seemed very happy). - No formal mentoring program, but the PD says this is something he would like to see go into place in the near future and he said he does unofficially always try to connect new residents with senior residents and attendings who share similar interests and who can be of help to them. - There is no formal Global Health involvement, but the PD is very much in support of these efforts and is more than happy to help me get involved in that. - Overall, everyone I interviewed with seemed excited to talk to me and encouraging that I'd rank high - They said they had a record # of applicants this year, so we are the cream of the crop. "The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
