Interview Experience

"1. Allegheny General Hospital: Pros: - Can accommodate Shabbos - Can take vacation days anyway you’d like – i.e., not necessarily in 1-2 week blocks - Really friendly staff, and seemingly approachable PD and APD - Lots of opportunity to do procedures - Good training - Research incentives - + 5 days of vacation per 1st authorships - ESIR opportunity - Few fellows - Lots of moonlighting opportunities - Seems like they really liked me B”H - Pittsburgh sounds like a nice city – there is a frum community and some kosher restaurants o There is a Kollel and since it’s a smaller city there might be more opportunities for learning with less intimidation - Cheap cost of living Cons: - It’s in Pittsburgh - There don’t seem to be any other Jews in the program - They say there’s 20 days of vacation but can only choose 15 of those days and the rest are statutory holidays - 5+ weeks of night float starting in R2 - Relatively low stipend even in senior years - We don’t know anyone in Pittsburgh and I think we both want somewhere where we can start thinking about putting down roots and being part of a community which I don’t think we see Pittsburgh as being the place to do this "

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
