"- TY Program in Dothan, AL - 12/year.........Overall rating: 9.4/10ish. - 405-bed hospital - Level II trauma center, stroke center, EP labs, Cath lab. You get "big city" type exposure but a small-town vibe. All newly renovated - looked quite nice in the virtual tour. - The residents seemed to indicate they were receptive to feedback and invested in resident success ("Not just a #) (Ex: They requested free access to UW for STEP 3 and the admin approved it very quickly). The residents say that a lot of people come back to work there after graduating/fellowship bc it is a great place to work with really friendly people and good atmosphere. - They offer five 2-week elective blocks and allow away rotations and audition rotations. - Free parking, meal stipend, discounted gym membership, licensure paid for, free UW for STEP 3. - Good resident camaraderie; residents seem happy and healthy, not burnt out, and happy with the program. - They offer training in things like the finances and other aspects of owning your own practice. - Wiregrass region in AL, about 3 hours from Mark and dad; known for peanuts. Population is about double that of Pittsfield. 43-91 degrees. Golf, boardwalk, trails, botanical garden. Doesn't seem like an overly exciting location. Residents say it is very safe and friendly, and only about 2 hours from beaches in the FL Panhandle. - Salary is lower ($54,000), but so is cost of living. - One 4-week block of vaca (Not sure if I got this right...). NO CALL except a tiny bit on surgery, and NEVER on nights. :) 12 weeks IM, 4 weeks each in ICU surgery, ambulatory, and ER. 5 blocks of electives. Main negative: No designated holidays off - It just depends on the rotation you're on and how it plays out. SCHEDULE: Depends on rotation - electives tend to be very chill. On wards it is usually 6-2 or 3, at the latest 6. - Most of rotations are at the mail hospital, a few at some outpt clinics, so not a lot of travel between sites. - Free food when on call...They have a Starbucks in the hospital; The residents said the cafeteria food is decent and we have access to a doctors lounge with free hot or premade foods, drinks, etc. Nearby there is a Chik-Fil-A. - Noon didactics, mostly resident-led, however, it is almost always the IM residents...TYs only lead like 1-2x/month. - Quite a bit of independence, but there's always attendings happy to help, and the amount of indep is somewhat variable depending on what we as the residents desire. - They have a formal mentoring program with "mentoring pods" - Pairing of an attending with a 3rd-year, 2nd-year, and a TY resident. You meet formally at least twice a year. There are 2 bi-annual socials where all the pods do activities together. - Good resident-attending dynamic - They're approachable. TYs work a lot with IM residents, but great comradery...Get together a decent amount outside of work. - Good work-life balance. Program respects family life well and supports resident wellness. - They do a a virtual meeting with you before you arrive to discuss is you are partially or fully matched and to get your input for scheduling and such - Residents indicated that they're very helpful in getting you to match to an advanced if you didn't initially. - Evals: After every rotation and then 2 dept-wide ones per year, but really it is an ongoing thing. - Access to sim lab of ACOM (AL College of Osteopathic Med). - PD was nice, but not overly bubbly, but seems very invested in making the experience a great one for the residents. Program coordinator was amazingly friendly and chatted quite a bit with me about the area. There were no other interviewers."

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
