Interview Experience
NEW

"Overall: 8.8-9/10 - Main downsides are location, notation from ACGME (but not a citation, still accredited). Location - not much to do there...It's a city but kind of small town vibe, some restaurants and things to do but not like a normal city per say. No mountains or beaches, mostly rolling plains. Closest family is Mark and dad, but still 13.5 hrs driving. Tornado Alley. Upsides of location" Low cost of living, affordable and ample housing options, friendly. - Very friendly PD and residents (who conducted one group interview - one was from SGU). The residents seemed genuinely happy and healthy, not burnt out. - Good vaca/holiday/sick time - 4 weeks/26 days PTO. - 3 blocks of electives, only 2 blocks medicine, but 3 blocks of surgery. - 2 wks of night float on IM and half of ER time is nights. - No formal mentoring program, but the residents said that all the attendings are very approachable and happy to answer any Qs and guide you as requested. Seem to promote all-around resident wellness (Physical, mental, and financial) - Offer resources like free financial counseling, marriage counseling, help with other life events, child care, diff insurance discounts (home, pet, etc.), discounts for certain entertainment and such. - All rotations are at the main 770ish-bed hospital...Can get rotations at other locations approved if desired rotation isn't available. Also affiliated with some output facilities. Level III trauma center. - They give a $2000 meal stipend, $500 moving stipend, and $1500 educational stipend. (+) free parking. - 1 block of research, split into two 2-week sections - does require you to come up with and research a Q via the PICO model in one and then the other requires you to prep and present for M&M conference and grand rounds. - Residents said that the admin/faculty is receptive to feedback, but in their experience, there has been little need for any changes. They did request more time in with the IR guy for procedures, which was pretty quickly put into place. They all raved about the procedures block(s) and said it really puts you ahead of most other residents in those types of skills."

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
