Interview Experience

"So theyre a medium sized university program associated with NYCOM, can use NYCOM respurces as well, do have housing on campus for residents but they said it was trash. They also let you use the gym at NYCOM which is also nice. They have medical students training on site there as well which is great cuz like enjoy mentoring/teaching all the things hahaa. They are only 35 mins by car from the manhattan and 45 mins from home so in theory I could possibly commute but I will not. Their hospital is actually beautiful and its all basically on two floors. They have a bunch of outpatient continuity clinics which im not super excited for but its nice to see that they have them dispersed thoughout the county. They have 18 PICU beds which is huge and they have no PICU fellows, which means more hand on for PICU which is what I would like to do. They have a shit ton of ED visits and see some pretty severe stuff which is kinda awesome because they cover from NYC to Albany and all the tiny hospitals refer patients to them. They get a mix of city and country diagnisis like lyme diseases and erchlichiosis. They have a great research mentorship and regular mentorship program for all interns starting. They have friday feeling days which are dedicated times when you basically bitch about residency once a week and “what happened this week” to your other residents, but no admin is there. They have outreach programs to local schools and work with legislature in Albany to help improve public policy such as the AAP National Advocacy Day for Children, stopped legislature on legalizing e-cigs. Seem very flexible when it comes to the PD, they love sarcasm. They do a pretending program where you get to act as an attending and make plans like one. Work on diversity and residency wellness with a new PICU attending who is trying to make some changes. Do have all the specialties, developmental and adolescent are outpatient during first year. Close to central hub white plains, local brewery, people go apple picking. child life specialists are very good. CONS: They do call Q4days 24 hour call. Currently without cardiac surgery because last one died in glider accident but are actively looking for new one, will most likely have by the time I start, they see ALOT of patients and have no patient CAP for residents, peds derm is Telehealth, continuity clinic is once a week outside of the hospital, 6 months of inpatient in first year (sounds like a lot), Rent sounds very expensive (resident said 2300)."

"The night before, the residents did a Q&A for the interview candidates. The morning of, the program coordinator shared a little bit about the program while waiting for the Program Director to give a powerpoint presentation about the program. We then moved into a waiting room with the other candidates and had the chance to chat with each other and occasionally with the program coordinator. We interviewed with the PD, faculty and the program coordinator. "
